Day/Time: Wednesday - Period: 3rd
Course Description: MEA-68
Students will jump into this introductory media analysis course using the show: Avatar the Last Airbender as their anchor to write various research and opinion based papers. Media analysis has often been described by youths and adults alike as a tedious chore. This course’s aim is to alleviate this by introducing students to the process of analyzing media, using fiction to capture their attention and focus.
In this course, students will:
- Write using complex vocabulary about equally complex content.
- Write structured and well-organized opinion, research, and informative pieces that:
◦ Use supporting claims and evidence based on credible video and text resources.
◦ Include an introduction, transitions, and a conclusion,.
◦ Integrate other forms of media and formats, such as graphs, charts, headings, audio, or video when applicable.
- Write pieces that display their analysis skills, including analysis of video and provided text when applicable, making comparisons and claims, and developing arguments using specific evidence from these resources.
In order to achieve this, we will go over the basics of fictional tropes, characters, and themes to see how fiction can be used to reflect reality. In addition to the show, students will be provided relevant printouts that will relate to real life historical and/or current events for their research based papers and presentations. Students will learn to compare and contrast this additional information to support their analysis. Student’s opinion based pieces will draw directly from specific episodes of Avatar the Last Airbender. They will learn early on that all the characters are complex, just like people in real life. Many of the characters whether they are the protagonists or antagonists are neither all good or bad. Instead, they are all somewhere in the middle. Students will analyze these complexities and construct their own opinion based pieces based on the characters, themes, and situations presented.
