Deborah Guy

I am a lifelong student who loves learning, and who loves to teach even more. My path through college included pre-veterinary studies, a brief encounter with engineering which took me through calculus 2, then on to liberal arts with a focus in psychology and Spanish for my B.S. in Liberal Arts from UF. My next turn took me into the dental hygiene program, earning an A.S. degree. I later entered graduate school (also at UF: Go Gators!) in entomology & nematology, until my first son was born. I always say that I haven't been bored a day since! Although I practiced in the field of dentistry for 27 years as a "career", I will never stop learning. After 13 years of homeschooling my 3 children, I fell in love with teaching just about anything, but my greatest passion is teaching my students, as I did my children, to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Chemistry

High School

GRADE LEVEL: 10th - 12th

Day/Time: Thursday - Period: 5-6A (1:30 - 3:00 PM)

Course Description: CHM-111

Prerequisites: Physical Science and Algebra I

In this level the student:

Examines the history and development of chemistry, careers and fields of study, nuclear chemistry and biochemistry, chemical reactions and balancing equations, acids and bases, the four phases of matter, molecular bonding, and the Periodic Table of Elements.
Learns about thermodynamics and quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Uses “Teen Life Principles” to apply wisdom to everyday situations.

The Chemistry course also offers free companion videos that supplement the workbooks with interactive, multimedia instruction. Separate Chemistry Labs provide the benefits of a scientific laboratory and allow students to observe “hands-on” lab experiments.

NOTE: STUDENTS MUST BE EITHER SELF-MOTIVATED, OR PARENTS MUST MONITOR THE STUDENT'S PROGRESS ON A WEEKLY BASIS. The nature of this curriculum will provide students with the capacity to work independently. Workbooks will be completed at home on a schedule--goals will be set for each week. Lab activities will be viewed at home and students will report their observations from the online lab experiments. Class time will cover the highlights of the pages for the week to be completed as homework. Tests will be given at the end of each booklet in class.
